On Nov. 6, 1987, the Reds traded one of my favorite players of the 80s, Kurt Stillwell, to the Royals for southpaw Danny Jackson.
A couple of other guys were involved, but that’s irrelevant.
Jackson responded by almost winning the 1988 NL Cy Young, losing out Orel Hershiser and his gaudy scoreless streak.
213 career wins, 154 saves, over 3,000 Ks, a Cy Young award and a World Series ring, Smoltzy is a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
No discussion necessary.
Justin Verlander might’ve won the AL Cy Young and the AL MVP, but he never had hipster glasses like Willie Hernández — the 1984 AL Cy Young recipient.
Verlander was never a lock-down reliever in RBI Baseball either. Nor will he ever be.
