80s Baseball Player of the Day

An ode to baseball's eightiest decade

Can’t make it up.

Can’t have Robin Yount without his running mate, Molly.
In 2004, Molitor went into the Hall of Fame as a Milwaukee Brewer, despite the fact the Selig family low-balled him with their contract offer.
A native Minnesotan, “The Ignitor” overcame drugs and injuries to notch 3,000 hits and capture a World Series MVP.

On Thursday, Detroit Miguel Cabrera mercifully won the AL MVP.
The burly slugger switched positions mid-career and took home the hardware over precocious California outfielder Mike Trout. Cabrera even played some outfield in his Florida days.
Robin Yount also won the AL MVP, once as an infielder and once as an outfielder.
I’d like to see the reaction to Cabrera if he threatened to quit baseball to join another professional sport a la Yount, with golf. I guess Miggy could go pro in Major League Eating! Zing!

Back on May 8, 1984, the White Sox and the Brewers played a 25-inning, eight-hour marathon that saw Pale Hose finally prevail 7-6 — with Tom Terrific winning the game in relief.
So I don’t want to hear the Pirates or the Cardinals complaining about yesterday’s 19-inning tilt. It’s nice to see baseball players put in an honest, eight-hour workday.
Tom Paciorek led the charge for Chicago, going 5-for-9 with three runs scored and one RBI… As a pinch-hitter for Ron Kittle.
Probably one of the highlight’s of Paciorek’s career that spanned 18 seasons.

“I’ve never ever one time looked at Facebook. I’ve never looked at Twitter. Whatever else they have out there, I’m not a social media guy,” Yost said.

Last week, the Royals held a Social Media Night. Seemed like a great deal for $35, since that is basically the cost to park or take the train to the “new” Yankee Stadium.
Also, Yost said to some truckers through his CB radio.

Along with pitching a no-hitter back in 1993 against the Boston Beaneaters, the second in Kingdome history, Chris Bosio compiled a pretty solid MLB career.
Also, the difficulty of pitching a no-no is amplified when you’re dipping 16 oz. of Skoal Cherry like Bosio is in this picture.
But you knew that already.

“Backstabbers, low blowers, illegal cocaine growers…” — U-God, “Investigative Reports.”
Jaime (Hi-May) Cocanower’s name reminded of this epic from GZA’s stone-cold classic album, Liquid Swords.
According to Cocanower’s 1987 Topps bio, he “works as an accountant” in the off-season and “enjoys outings of going deep sea fishing.”
I’m pretty sure this is like 99% of the plot of the “Carlito’s Way.”

Now we know what would happen if Andre the Giant and Lou Ferrigno combined to conceive a child, like Arnold in that movie “Junior.”
I own this card, and the factoid supplied on the back read “John Henry participated in Little League baseball.”
That has to be the blandest blurb ever conceived by a minimum-wage Topps caption writer.
