80s Baseball Player of the Day |
An ode to baseball's eightiest decade |
Zack Greinke broke his collarbone last night in an insane brawl that was perpetrated by Carlos Quentin.
If legendary brawler Ray Knight played for the Dodgers, things might have shook out differently.
Although kudos to Matt Kemp for attempting a postgame fight with Quentin in the bowels of Dodger Stadium. Bonus points for insulting Stanford, Quentin’s alma mater.
“I think Carlos Quentin went to Stanford, something like that?” Kemp said after the game. “I heard there’s smart people at Stanford. That wasn’t too smart. Greinke didn’t do anything wrong. That stuff happens in the minor leagues. It doesn’t happen in the big leagues.”
Nick Swisher signed with the Cleveland Indians today.
As a New York Yankee fan, I’m glad I won’t be subjected to “Swishalicious“‘s miserable postseason flailing anymore.
I will miss the sky-point after a double against the Royals in June and the tongue-wagging though.
Anyway, his pappy Steve Swisher is probably pretty hyped up, bro.
New York will miss your crazy shenanigans.
Our final memory will be of you horrifically misplaying that Delmon Young’s humpback liner in Game One of the ALCS.
Pariah. Spitter. Hall of Famer. Gold Glover. Classic Met. Arizona Diamondback. Wearer of jaunty mustaches. Leveler of Excellence. Possessor of pensive looks.
Roberto Alomar was a wearer of many different hats. Including this dope San Diego Padres cap.
The Winter Meetings are finally upon us, down in Nashville.
Here’s hoping some big names, like Fred McGriff back in 1989, start moving around the chessboard.
More Fred McGriffs, Robbie Alomars and Tony Fernandezes, less James Loneys and Chris Resopes.
Sandy Alomar Jr. played 20 years in the Majors… I’d say Topps was 50% right about him being a “Future Star.”
He did hit a massive home run off of Mariano Rivera in the 1997 ALDS. Oh, the days of the five-game ALDS!
Recently, the Friars donned these classic uniforms in a game against the Mets. What a great look.
On Sunday, Kevin Correia pitched two innings of relief in the Pirates’ 19-inning win over the Cardinals.
He took the ball again on Monday, working the first 4 1/3 innings of a 3-1 loss to the Friars.
The last player to pitch in relief a day before starting, Oakland’s Dave Beard back in 1982.
On this date in baseball, S.F. southpaw Dave Dravecky returned to the rubber after a 15-month battle with cancer and pitched a one-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds.
Pretty bad ass.
According to NationalPastime.com, on this date in baseball in 1986, Padres manager Steve Boros tried to give umpire Charlie Williams a videotape of a blown call from the night before.
Apparently, the umpires in the 1980s had the same hubris as they do in the aughts, as Boros was ejected before the game even started.
Surprised Ozzie Guillen hasn’t tried this tactic before.

“And they said that it was a bad idea to combine peyote and baseball card art.”
This should have been the concept behind Oz: The Great and Powerful.
lol that CBS actually had a professional gambler on it’s pregame show
