80s Baseball Player of the Day

An ode to baseball's eightiest decade
Just hope Jesse Orosco is still the all-time leader in games pitched, or did #Topps decide to strip him of his records as well?

Today is the day pitchers and catchers report for the Atlanta Braves.
In celebration of this joyous occasion, here is former Bravo southpaw phenom Steve Avery wearing a baseball jersey that strongly resembles the Montreal Canadiens’ iconic sweater.

I think any Met fan that witnessed Tom Glavine gag up seven runs in the first inning of New York’s win-or-go home loss to the Florida Marlins on Sept. 30 2007, would argue vehemently against his inclusion to ESPN’s Top 100 list.
Old Hoss Radbourn certainly did.

“#93: T. Glavine. Milquetoast lefty with a strike zone larger than E. Gregg. Not a bride or bridesmaid but rather the groom’s ugly sister.”

After yesterday’s Napalm Sale, which is what I’ll refer to it as it was far more severe than a fire sale, I’m pretty sure Jeffrey Loria would have nodded approvingly of Charlie Finley’s infamous trades of 1976.
In one, Charley O. outright solid Vida Blue to the New York Yankees.
But, Commissioner Bowie Kuhn stepped in and overturned that transaction, along with the Fingers-Rudi deal to Boston.
Memo to Bud Selig, but his knowledge of that era sadly only extends to 1976 Ford Pintos.

On Nov. 6, 1987, the Reds traded one of my favorite players of the 80s, Kurt Stillwell, to the Royals for southpaw Danny Jackson.
A couple of other guys were involved, but that’s irrelevant.
Jackson responded by almost winning the 1988 NL Cy Young, losing out Orel Hershiser and his gaudy scoreless streak.

Another Rated Rookie, Greg Swindell.
Although he made the All-Star team in 1989, he’s more remember for his stellar college career at the University of Texas.

Back from a Labor Day hiatus with a player who had several hiatuses (seven suspensions to be exact) throughout his checkered career.
Drugs and alcohol got the best of Steve Howe eventually, as he died in a car wreck. The autopsy showed he had meth in his system at the time.
